Although amethyst and alexandrite have some similarities in appearance, the two stones are fundamentally different in terms of price and other aspects.
– First of all, alexandrite is a type of chrysoberyl (chemical formula BeAl2O4), while amethyst is a colored quartz (SIO2).
– Alexandrite is available in both red and green shades and may turn purple under incandescent light. Amethyst, on the other hand, mostly appears in shades of lavender to dark purple.
– Alexandrite has a higher Mohs hardness of 8.5 than amethyst’s 7, so the hardness of the two differs.
– Alexandrite is a member of the June birthstone, while amethyst is the February birthstone.
– The difference in price. Before the 19th century, amethyst was most likely considered a stone of comparable rarity to alexandrite. But since the discovery of massive mines in Brazil in the 19th century, amethyst has lost much of its value. Natural alexandrite, on the other hand, remains one of the precious stone of the highest rarity and price until today.
