Alexandrite and tanzanite are both sought-after dark-colored stones, but there are many differences.
– First of all, alexandrite is an chrysoberyl, while tanzanite is a naturally occurring mineral, zoisite. Thus alexandrite can be grown in a laboratory under certain conditions to produce a less expensive alternative, whereas tanzanite is only available as an optimized natural tanzanite after a heat treatment.
– Alexandrite’s most prominent advantage is its ability to change color from green to red in daylight and incandescent light due to its special color-changing properties. Tanzanite, on the other hand, cannot change color and mostly appears blue or purple or, less frequently, green.
– Alexandrite has a hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale, which makes it more durable than tanzanite, which has a hardness of 6.5.
– Alexandrite is the birthstone of June, while tanzanite is the birthstone of December.
– The difference in price. Natural alexandrite is very rare and therefore natural alexandrite will cost much more than tanzanite. For most people, therefore, alexandrite is more out of reach than tanzanite.
