There are two classification listings for birthstones. Modern and Ancient. Modern birthstones date back to the 20th century, while ancient birthstones date back to the 15th century! The main reason for having multiple birthstones in some months is that various ancient stones have become so rare that it is less likely that they will be available on the market and meet consumer demand.
Thus there are three birthstones for June: pearl, moonstone and alexandrite. Pearl and moonstone have been considered birthstones for June since the 1900s, while alexandrite was only included in the modern birthstone list by the Jewelers of America in the 1950s due to its rarity.
